Description

Climatic Requirements

• Temperature: Ideal between 25°C to 35°C; tolerates up to 45°C.

• Rainfall: Low to moderate (500–800 mm annually); too much rain during flowering/fruiting harms the crop.

• Sunlight: Requires full sun.

• Altitude: Grows well up to 500 m above sea level; can tolerate higher elevations with care.

Soil Requirements

• Type: Well-drained loamy or sandy loam soils.

• pH: 5.5 to 7.5 (tolerates slightly alkaline soils).

• Drainage: Crucial; pomegranates do not tolerate waterlogging.

Flowering & Fruiting

• Three flowering seasons in India:

  • Mrig bahar (June–July, harvested Feb–March)

  • Ambe bahar (Feb–March, harvested Aug–Sept)

  • Hasta bahar (Oct–Nov, harvested May–June)

• Mrig bahar is most preferred due to less pest/disease incidence

• Fruit borer

• Aphids

• Whiteflies

Major Diseases:

• Fruit rot (Aspergillus, Alternaria)

• Wilt (Fusarium spp.)

• Leaf spot
